Escaping from prison can be a daunting task. However, for Michael Cataroja, it was as simple as taking a leisurely walk out of New Bilibid Prison (NBP). In a surprising turn of events, Cataroja managed to slip out of the country’s main penitentiary by casually joining the visitors leaving the facility.
A police official revealed the details of Cataroja’s daring escape on Friday. According to Angono municipal police station chief Major Lauro Moratillo, Cataroja “casually” walked out of the maximum security compound by blending in with the visitors on a day designated for visitation.
Furthermore, Moratillo shared that Cataroja claimed to have found someone of his height and used a ballpoint pen to create a fake stamp mark for NBP visitors. This allowed him to deceive the prison’s security measures.
Cataroja was apprehended by the Angono police in Barangay San Isidro on Thursday. The Bureau of Corrections has ordered an investigation to determine how Cataroja managed to escape from NBP’s maximum security compound.
Cataroja, who was convicted of violating the Anti-Fencing Law and is currently on trial for car theft, will face additional charges for his escape.
