Police Report: Individual Injured in Altercation Regarding Cinema Seating

An Albuquerque movie theater turned into a tragic scene on Sunday when a military veteran was fatally shot in front of his wife during an argument over reserved seating. According to documents obtained by HuffPost, Michael Tenorio and his wife, Trina Tenorio, got into a dispute with 19-year-old Enrique Padilla and his girlfriend about seating arrangements at the Century Rio theater. The argument escalated when Padilla and his girlfriend asked theater staff to move the Tenorios from their reserved seats during a screening of “No Hard Feelings.” Although the staff relocated the couple to a different seat, Padilla expressed discomfort sitting next to them and threw a bag of popcorn at Michael Tenorio. In response, Tenorio approached Padilla and pushed him against the wall while uttering, “What the hell.” Padilla retaliated by pulling out a handgun and firing multiple shots, striking Tenorio twice. Trina Tenorio, in an interview with the police, recounted the devastating moment and mentioned that she saw a green laser attachment on the gun, which was also pointed at her. After the shooting, she grabbed Padilla’s shirt and screamed at him while he and his girlfriend fled. Trina chased the girlfriend and engaged in a physical altercation. Notably, Michael Tenorio was unarmed and did not own a firearm. Officers later found Padilla nearby, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was subsequently arrested by the Albuquerque Police Department on charges of murder, shooting at an occupied building, and tampering with evidence. Further investigation revealed that the gun in Padilla’s possession had been stolen. As of now, Padilla has not appeared in court, and it’s uncertain whether he has legal representation. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing issue of gun-related deaths in the United States, with an average of 43,375 people dying each year, according to data from the nonprofit group Everytown for Gun Safety. New Mexico specifically has the sixth-highest rate of gun deaths in the country.
