Burbank authorities have determined that the suspected explosives found in a residential property were actually old road flares, according to a statement released by the Burbank Police Department. Police received a report of a “suspicious item” in the 1800 block of North Maple Street and promptly responded to the scene. The homeowner had discovered a metal box while cleaning out their garage and believed it contained old dynamite that had belonged to their deceased father, who worked as a miner.
Upon examination, the officers could not definitively identify the item, as it was severely corroded. They took a photograph of it and contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson and Explosives Detail for further assistance. As a precautionary measure, the surrounding neighborhood was cordoned off and several residential units were evacuated.
