A dramatic video footage has been discovered, shedding light on a shooting ambush that took place in Fargo, North Dakota, last month.

According to the AP report, the incident resulted in the death of one police officer and injuries to two other officers and a civilian.

On July 14, while four officers were attending to a minor car accident, Mohamad Barakat unexpectedly opened fire with a .223-caliber rifle.

In the newly released footage from Officer Zach Robinson’s body camera, the sound of Barakat’s gunfire echoes as Robinson informs dispatchers, “We’ve got a man with an AK-47, he’s shooting at us.”

While taking cover behind a vehicle, Robinson fires back at Barakat.

“We’ve got three officers down… send everybody,” Robinson can be heard shouting.

The 37-year-old gunman killed Officer Jake Wallin, injured officers Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes, and bystander Karlee Koswick.

Ultimately, Robinson managed to shoot and eliminate Barakat, preventing a potentially larger attack. Authorities discovered a significant arsenal of weapons in the shooter’s car, including multiple guns, 1,800 rounds of ammunition, explosives, and propane tanks, which had to be safely detonated by the bomb squad.

23-year-old Wallin had only been a police officer for three months. His funeral attracted a large gathering of people who came to show their support and mourn his loss, as reported by CBS News Minnesota.

The body camera footage from Officer Zach Robinson was presented to the public by North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley and Fargo Police Chief David Zibolski.

“The motive was obvious, driven by hate and the desire to kill,” stated Wrigley.

Dotas, Hawes, and Koswick have all been released from the hospital and are recovering.

Gunman’s Search for “Mass Shooting Events”

In 2022, the police interviewed Barakat regarding the stockpile of guns, ammunition, and propane tanks found in his apartment, as reported by AP News.

In 2021, he was also interviewed after the FBI received an anonymous tip expressing concern about his mental health, as detailed in an AP News article.

All evidence suggests that Barakat coincidentally stumbled upon the traffic crash on July 14 and used it as a diversion from his actual intended target, according to state Attorney General Drew Wrigley during a press conference in July. Barakat’s internet searches included “mass shooting events” and led him to a news article about the Downtown Fargo Street Fair, which was taking place nearby. It remains unclear if the fair was his intended target, as Barakat also searched for information about the Red River Valley Fair, located a short distance away.
