Electric car company Polestar recently announced a groundbreaking agreement with Tesla, stating that beginning in 2025, all new Polestar vehicles sold in North America will use Tesla’s North American Charging Standard connector for electric vehicle charging. This decision marks a significant shift from the current Combined Charging System standard. Polestar recognizes Tesla’s pioneering role in advancing the adoption of electric vehicles and the popularity of their Supercharger network, which currently boasts 12,000 charging points. By adopting Tesla’s charging technology, Polestar aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in a key automotive region.

The North American Charging Standard (NACS) was developed by Tesla and has been utilized in their own vehicles since 2012. In the past year, Tesla opened up access to this technology for other manufacturers, albeit with limited access to Tesla Supercharger stations for a duration of 10 years. Ford and GM are among the recent companies that have entered into agreements with Tesla to provide their drivers access to Tesla chargers. Ford, for instance, will enable their EVs to utilize Tesla’s network of 12,000 superchargers in the United States and Canada, effectively doubling the number of fast-chargers available to their owners. Ford vehicles like the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and E-transit will be fitted with Tesla adaptors compatible with the Combined Charging System port access. Similarly, GM car owners will have the option to use a CCS-to-NACS adapter to access Tesla’s extensive network of fast-chargers across the country.
