Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar announced today that it has partnered with Tesla to provide charging access for its EV owners at approximately 12,000 Tesla charging stations across North America from 2022.

Starting in 2025, all new Polestar vehicles sold in North America will come equipped with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug. Additionally, existing Polestar owners will be able to charge their vehicles at Tesla’s Supercharger stations using an adapter from mid-2024.

This collaboration between Polestar and Tesla follows a similar agreement between Volvo Cars and Tesla, illustrating the growing trend of partnerships between major automakers to expand charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Ford Motor, General Motors, and Rivian have also recently announced similar agreements with Tesla.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath expressed admiration for Tesla’s contributions to electric vehicle adoption and commended the availability of the Supercharger network for Polestar owners, stating that it will significantly accelerate the adoption of EVs in the region.

Most non-Tesla EVs and charging stations in North America employ the Combined Charging System (CCS) plug design. However, studies have shown that CCS charging networks have lower reliability compared to Tesla’s network. Critics have also observed that the CCS fast-charging plug is larger and heavier than the NACS plug, which may pose challenges for certain drivers, such as older or disabled individuals.

While Tesla EVs can use CCS chargers with an adapter, only Tesla vehicles are currently compatible with Tesla chargers.

Previously proprietary, Tesla published the technical details of its plug design in November and made it available to other automakers and EV charger manufacturers with the aim of promoting standardized charging solutions. SAE International, an engineering group responsible for auto industry standards, is currently in the process of developing public standards for Tesla’s NACS charging plug.
