Podcast Deal Between Spotify and Harry and Meghan’s Production Company Terminated

Spotify and Prince Harry and Meghan’s production company have made the decision to end their multiyear podcasting deal, which resulted in the creation of Meghan’s popular 12-episode podcast called “Archetypes.” The podcast, which launched in August 2022, featured high-profile guests such as Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, and Mindy Kaling.

In a statement, Spotify mentioned that they and Archewell Audio are parting ways but did not disclose any further details. The initial partnership between Spotify and Archewell Audio was announced in late 2020 and was intended to be an exclusive, multiyear collaboration focused on hosting and producing podcasts that promote shared experiences and values within the community. The first podcast series, “Archetypes,” aimed to challenge and dismantle societal labels that hold women back.

Although “Archetypes” ranked highly on Spotify’s ratings lists, it did not make the platform’s list of top podcasts for the year. Some critics argued that the media paid more attention to revelations about Harry and Meghan’s personal life as working royals than to the interviews with the podcast’s celebrity guests.

The reason behind the decision to end the partnership remains unclear. However, it comes after Spotify announced job cuts of 200 employees in an effort to realign its podcast business strategy. According to The Wall Street Journal, sources familiar with the matter revealed that Harry and Meghan did not meet the productivity benchmarks required to receive the full payout of the approximately $20 million deal.

Representatives for WME, the talent agency representing Meghan, expressed pride in the podcast created for Spotify and stated that Meghan is currently developing more content for the “Archetypes” audience on another platform.

Since stepping back from the royal family in 2020, Harry and Meghan have signed several lucrative deals, including a documentary series produced for Netflix titled “Harry and Meghan” and Harry’s bestselling memoir, “Spare.” Notably, other high-profile individuals, such as Barack and Michelle Obama, have also ended exclusive deals with Spotify to make their content available on multiple platforms.
