PM’s ‘Level Up’ Plan to Expand Knighthoods in the North

Plans are underway to promote inclusivity in the honours system by granting more knight and damehoods to individuals residing in the North of England. Rishi Sunak has directed civil servants to prioritize under-represented regions following a government audit that revealed a significant imbalance, with residents of London and the South East being more than twice as likely to receive these prestigious titles.

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden stated that the Prime Minister is committed to ensuring that the honours system accurately reflects the diversity and breadth of the entire country. To achieve this, ten specialist honours committees have been instructed to level up the system, particularly focusing on regions that have been historically overlooked.

Additionally, the government aims to acknowledge the contributions of individuals who have made a positive impact on their communities and have delivered value for money to taxpayers. Ministerial officials have been urged to break the dominance of the “London Metropolitan elite” and recognize exceptional achievements in regional areas.

A source emphasized the necessity of leveling up the honours system, stating that certain parts of the country are currently not receiving their fair share of recognition.
