PLDT to Establish its Largest Data Hub yet, a 100-MW Facility

MANILA – The race for data center supremacy is intensifying as the PLDT Group reveals plans to construct its largest facility yet, with a capacity of at least 100 megawatts (MW). The company aims to position the Philippines as the next hyperscaler hub in Asia. Victor Genuino, president and CEO of ePLDT, the ICT subsidiary of PLDT, stated that the company has allocated funds for these digital infrastructures to meet the growing demand for online platforms.

With the construction of this new facility, PLDT aims to increase its current 65% market share in the data center industry. The planned facility falls just short of Ayala Group’s $1 billion data hub in Fairview, Quezon City, which has a capacity of 124 MW.

Details regarding the project timeline, investment, and location have not been disclosed yet. The PLDT Group was contacted for further information but has not responded.

A 100 MW facility can accommodate thousands of servers and related IT hardware. A data hub serves as a storage facility for critical applications and data.

Genuino expressed the company’s goal of establishing the Philippines as the next hyperscaler hub in Asia and supporting the digital transformation of various local sectors. PLDT has been making significant investments in its ecosystem to ensure that its data centers play a crucial role in the country’s digital economy.

Hyperscalers, such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google GCP, provide cloud, networking, and internet services.

PLDT is currently building its 11th data center, VITRO Sta. Rosa, which is expected to be operational by early next year. Genuino mentioned that they have already received colocation requests for this data center from sectors such as banks, business process outsourcing, carriers, and the government.

Once the 11th and 12th data centers are completed, ePLDT’s capacity will reach 200 MW. According to Santos Knight Frank, the Philippines currently has a data center capacity of 94 MW.

A report by S&P Global Market Intelligence predicts a 13% compounded annual growth rate for the country’s data center industry until 2025.
