Planned Parenthood Faces Accusations of Incorrectly Diagnosing `Common Constipation’

A former patient of Planned Parenthood has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit, alleging that she was misdiagnosed with “common constipation” when she actually had serious issues that posed a threat to her reproductive capability.

Kipenzi Chidinma’s lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, names Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc., Planned Parenthood Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley Inc., and Dr. Catherine Khoo as defendants. Chidinma is seeking unspecified damages.

The lawsuit states, “Despite the plaintiff’s repeated efforts, Planned Parenthood utilized their superior knowledge and made the wrongful and negligent diagnosis of simple constipation.”

A representative from Planned Parenthood did not respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit made outside of regular business hours.

In March 2022, Chidinma visited Planned Parenthood for a wellness exam and reported abnormally heavy vaginal bleeding, headaches, hormonal imbalance, and other related discomforts and abnormalities. However, she alleges that she was denied an ultrasound and told she had “common constipation.”

Chidinma argued that her condition was more serious and requested an ultrasound and further testing, but she was denied and assured that the constipation diagnosis was accurate. The suit also claims that she was not referred to a specialist.

Chidinma’s symptoms persisted and worsened over several months, leading her to return to Planned Parenthood in January. It was during this visit that she discovered the facility did not have ultrasound equipment. She was eventually examined by another provider, who quickly diagnosed an expanded uterus with masses, which could have been detected during the March 2022 visit to Planned Parenthood.

Distressed, Chidinma contacted her insurance carrier from her car and sought coverage from a different provider organization. At the new facility, she learned that she had large and advanced fibroids, putting her reproductive health at risk. The suit states that non-surgical options she had in March 2022 were no longer available.

Chidinma has experienced severe emotional distress, physical harm, and economic losses as a result of this ordeal.
