Plan Ahead for London Train and Tube Strikes in October 2023: Key Dates and Impacted Services

Train station ticket office closures

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) has announced the closure of nearly all railway station ticket offices. The staff will be reassigned to station platform and concourse duties, with ticket office facilities remaining open only at the busiest stations. Posters will be displayed in stations to inform passengers about the potential closures. The final decision on which offices will be shut will be made by the Government following a consultation. The closure program is expected to last for three years.

Reasons behind Aslef’s strike

Aslef members have decided to take industrial action in order to demand a pay raise. The union has expressed its dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to meet its negotiating team, including general secretary Mick Whelan, assistant general secretary Simon Weller, and executive committee president Dave Calfe. The representatives of the employers, the Rail Delivery Group, last met with the union in April, as per the agreed post-pandemic framework of the Rail Industry Recovery Group. Mr. Whelan emphasized the lack of communication from key government officials and train companies since then, stating, “Do you remember Where’s Wally? Well, what we want to know is Where’s Harper? We last saw the Secretary of State for Transport in December. We last saw Huw Merriman, the Rail Minister, in January. And we last saw the train companies in April. Since then, nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not a letter, not an email, not a text message, not a phone call, not a WhatsApp. Not a word!”
