José Martínez Pirri has been honored with the title of Honorary President of the renowned Real Madrid following a unanimous vote at the Extraordinary General Assembly, which was conducted in person and online at the Real Madrid City basketball pavilion. The Madrid icon was met with a standing ovation from the Representative Members. President Florentino Pérez took the time to pay homage to Amancio and express his admiration for Pirri, stating: “Amancio embodied everything that Real Madrid stands for and what our crest symbolizes for the millions of people who respect our history. He will always hold a special place in all of our hearts, just like Alfredo Di Stéfano, our first honorary president of Real Madrid, and his successor Paco Gento.”
“And now, after bidding farewell to Amancio Amaro, and expressing our gratitude for everything he contributed, the Board of Directors of Real Madrid recommends the name of one of our club’s greatest legends as his successor at this Extraordinary Assembly.”

We were about to play against Barcelona, we were sitting in the room, the door opened and the coach Miguel Muñoz appeared. He stared at me and said: “Lad, you’re playing tomorrow”. He went to the door and left. I looked at my teammates, who were older than me, and I said: “He told me I’m playing tomorrow”. And I actually played. That was my debut in a Real Madrid shirt, against Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium and it was one of the most important days of my life, just as it is today.”
