August 9 (UPI) — In an astonishing tale of survival, a pigeon in Britain managed to endure an 80-mile drive while being stuck behind the front grille of a car. Animal rescuers from the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service shared the incredible story.
The Cotterell family from Hassocks, Sussex, were heading to Bentworth, Hampshire, for a day trip when their car collided with a pigeon. Unaware that the bird had become trapped behind the car’s grille, they continued their journey and returned home later that day, completely unaware of the surprise passenger they were carrying.
It wasn’t until a kind pedestrian noticed the trapped pigeon and alerted the family that they became aware of its predicament. Katherine Cotterell recounted, “It was only when a passing pedestrian knocked on our door in the evening that we noticed the pigeon behind the grille, so we phoned East Sussex WRAS for help.”
Trevor Weeks, the operations director for East Sussex WRAS, responded to the family’s call for assistance. He inspected the car and discovered a crack in the grille, likely caused by the force of the pigeon’s impact. Weeks commented, “I’m not surprised that they didn’t notice it being in there.”
The pigeon was immediately taken to the veterinary facility of East Sussex WRAS. Upon examination, it was determined that the bird had only sustained minor injuries and a possible clavicle fracture. Thankfully, the pigeon is now stable and expected to make a full recovery.
