Physiotherapist caught drink driving, avoids jail despite court appearance

A physiotherapist accused of drink-driving has avoided jail time thanks to her lawyer’s argument that she deserves additional support for her work on the frontlines of the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic. Georgina Davies, 39, was breathalysed on April 11 at the AstraZeneca campus in Cheshire after tailgating another vehicle. Davies had been seen at a nearby pub earlier. When police arrived, they noticed she was slurring her words and unsteady on her feet. She tested well above the legal alcohol limit. During her court hearing, the magistrate recused himself due to personal bias after witnessing Davies’s condition. Another magistrate took his place. It was later revealed that Davies had been drinking prior to the hearing, but her defense team and probation officer confirmed that she was still capable of functioning and understanding the proceedings. Davies, who works as a team leader at a hospital, argued that she had been under immense pressure during the pandemic and had contracted COVID-19 multiple times. Her lawyer stated that frontline NHS workers, like Davies, deserve extra support due to the challenges they face. Despite admitting to driving with excess alcohol, Davies received a suspended jail sentence of 14 weeks, a 3-year driving ban, and other requirements such as attending rehabilitative activities and an alcohol treatment program.
