Photos from helicopters highlight London’s evolving skyline as towers ascend and massive developments emerge in the past two decades.

London’s ever-changing skyline is a combination of iconic structures and ambitious developments, driven by the growing demand to live in the capital. In an awe-inspiring ‘before’ and ‘after’ series, helicopter photographer Jason Hawkes showcases the evolution of the city’s infrastructure over the past decade.

Mr. Hawkes, who has been capturing London from the skies for the past 20 years, took these photographs while hanging out of an open two-engine jet turbine AS355 helicopter. Despite technological advancements, his approach to capturing images has remained largely unchanged.

While he now uses a digital camera instead of an analogue film camera, he continues to fly over the same areas with some of the same pilots. However, what has truly transformed are the physical landscapes of London. According to Mr. Hawkes, the city has undergone more significant changes in the past three to four years than ever before.

He points out that due to the relatively slow pace of construction work, it’s easy to overlook the rapid transformation, even within our own neighborhoods. “You may think, ‘oh it’s changed a bit’,” he explains, “but it’s only when I look back at a picture from 10 years ago that I realize how buildings have been demolished and new skyscrapers have emerged.”

Mr. Hawkes’ remarkable photo series coincides with plans for the construction of 70 new skyscrapers and tower blocks throughout the capital. Building developers are submitting applications for innovative designs following the success and completion of recent unique structures like the Shard and the Cheesegrater.

The stunning ‘before’ and ‘after’ images showcase various locations in London, capturing the dramatic transformations firsthand. From the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford to Battersea Power Station, each image reveals the remarkable evolution of the cityscape.

Other locations featured include the River Thames and Tower Bridge, Aldgate, Wembley Stadium, South Quay, Nine Elms, Earl’s Court, North Greenwich, King’s Cross Central, Tower of London, Highbury Stadium, Vauxhall, and Aldgate.

Jason Hawkes’ aerial photography offers a mesmerizing perspective on the evolving face of London, highlighting the dynamic nature of the city’s architectural landscape. As new structures continue to shape the skyline, it becomes increasingly evident that the only constant in London’s ever-changing cityscape is change itself.
