Philippines hit by powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake with tsunami warning

Philippines Battered by Strong Earthquake, Tsunami Warning Issued – In a terrifying turn of events, a formidable earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale rocked the southern coast of the Philippines, prompting widespread panic and a tsunami alert in the dead of night.

The temblor, striking at a depth of 32 kilometers (20 miles), caused no immediate signs of significant destruction or casualties, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Initially, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center predicted potential tsunami waves targeting the southern Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, and Malaysia, but the alert was subsequently rescinded.

In Japan, thousands of individuals were compelled to evacuate from various parts of Okinawa Prefecture due to strike orders issued.

As a precaution, residents along the coastal areas of southern Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental were urged by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to seek higher ground immediately.

Additionally, boat owners in the affected provinces were instructed to secure their vessels and move away from the shore. Those at sea were advised to remain in deep waters until further notice.

Bacolcol, from the quake agency, warned of a potential 1-meter (3.2-foot) tsunami, with even higher waves possible in enclosed areas.

As the events unfolded, villagers were seen fleeing their homes to safety in Hinatuan town and surrounding areas of Surigao del Sur province, with limited specifics available from authorities and the government’s disaster-response agency.

In the aftermath of the quake, there have been no reports of a tsunami striking the coast, but continuous monitoring is being conducted by officials.

This latest natural disaster adds to the Philippines’ long list of harrowing experiences, as its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” makes it susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic activity, in addition to the numerous typhoons and storms that batter the archipelago on an annual basis.
