New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy, argues that parents do not have the right to be informed about significant decisions their children make regarding their gender identity, despite the state’s insistence on respecting the children’s choices.
The Murphy administration believes that children, whose brains are not yet fully developed, know better.
This is absolutely outrageous.
State Attorney General, Matthew Platkin, has even gone as far as to take legal action to prevent three school districts – Middletown, Marlboro, and Manalapan-Englishtown – from requiring schools to inform parents if their children choose to switch genders.
Platkin had previously obtained an injunction against such policies in June. The judge in Tuesday’s hearing will soon determine whether the three districts can proceed with notifying parents until a final decision is made.
According to New Jersey law, children have the right to identify as any gender they choose and schools must accommodate them, including allowing them to use the corresponding bathrooms and locker rooms. This is all done without parental consent.
This is already a radical approach. After all, teachers typically require parental permission for basic things such as administering medication, showing films, or offering snacks.
Even worse, the Murphy administration believes that schools should not have to inform parents of their children’s decisions. Instead, teachers and staff should actively deceive the parents.
They argue that informing parents would be considered “outing” the child, an act of discrimination. However, everyone at school, and likely the entire community, would already be aware of the child’s decision because that is what the child desires.
