PGA Tour asserts that U.S. golf would face challenges without financial support from Saudi Arabia

According to two PGA officials who testified during a congressional hearing, joining forces with Saudi-backed LIV Golf is the smartest move to prevent the PGA Tour from losing more money and top players. The hearing, conducted by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, featured testimony from Jimmy Dunne and Ron Price, both of whom played key roles in brokering a deal with LIV Golf. They expressed their concerns about players leaving the Tour for LIV Golf and the ongoing court battle between the two organizations over a lawsuit filed by LIV Golf in 2022, alleging an illegal monopoly.

Dunne explained that he joined the PGA Tour’s governing board in January with the goal of avoiding further damage to professional golf. He reached out to Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of LIV Golf’s parent company, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), to initiate discussions. Dunne emphasized the negative impact of continuing legal battles on golf and its stakeholders, including costly lawsuits, player defections, disinterested fans, and nervous sponsors.

Members of Congress, including Senators Richard Blumenthal and Ron Johnson, conducted the hearing in Washington to investigate the PGA Tour’s plans. They invited Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf, and Al-Rumayyan to attend but they were not present.

Dunne credited his conversation with Al-Rumayyan for the official announcement of the PGA Tour’s plan to establish a new for-profit golfing league with financial support from PIF. He stressed that if the PGA Tour had not taken action, LIV Golf would have lured away all the top golfers, potentially damaging the future of professional golf. Dunne warned lawmakers that the PGA Tour is relatively small in terms of player numbers, making it vulnerable to losing its top talent.

Holding the purse strings

The agreement between the PGA and PIF has faced criticism from players, human rights advocates, and individuals affected by the September 11 terrorist attacks. Critics argue that Saudi Arabia’s investment is an attempt to promote a positive image through sports, known as “sportswashing.” Some players expressed feeling blindsided by the proposed merger and concerns about the sport’s future if the tours unite.

In a recent press conference, PGA golfer Rory McIlroy expressed his dislike for LIV Golf and his hope that it doesn’t succeed.

There is much at stake in terms of control over a multi-billion dollar sports competition that has gained global fame thanks to legendary players like Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson. According to financial records, the PGA Tour generated approximately $1.6 billion in revenue in 2021 and 2022, with projected revenue of $2.1 billion for this year. Dunne revealed that negotiations for the new golfing league are ongoing, but details remain private. However, he assured lawmakers that the PGA Tour will retain management control and a majority presence on the board of directors.

Senator Blumenthal expressed admiration for the PGA Tour’s desire to maintain control but expressed concern over PIF’s financial influence on the league. He asked Ron Price about the amount of money PIF would contribute, to which Price responded, “north of $1 billion.”

Muzzling players?

During the hearing, Senator Blumenthal’s office released a draft of the PGA-PIF agreement, revealing a clause that lawmakers claim restricts PGA Tour players from making negative statements about PIF or Saudi Arabia. However, Dunne and Price made it clear that they would not support any agreement that limits players’ freedom of speech.

Dunne expressed his understanding of Senator Blumenthal’s concerns about avoiding a complete takeover but expressed confidence in achieving a mutually beneficial agreement.
