Petty Feud between Neighbors in Washington, DC: Man Lists Wall for Sale at $50K

A resident of Washington D.C. has put up for sale a large wall that he inherited from his father for a whopping price of $50,000. But this decision wasn’t made out of a desire to make a profit or upgrade his property. Instead, Allen Berger is selling the wall as a means to annoy his neighbor, Daniela Walls.

It all started when Berger’s father bought the wall as a joke, simply to claim ownership of property in Georgetown. However, after a dispute with his neighbor, Berger decided to put the brick facade on the market. Ironically, Walls, whose last name matches her current situation, owns the interior 12 inches of the wall. On the other hand, Berger possesses the exterior 12 inches on the south side of Walls’ house, which he acquired back in 2019. At the time of purchase, Walls was aware that Berger owned a part of her home’s wall.

Trouble began in 2020 when Walls noticed water leaking into her house from the beams in the portion of the wall owned by Berger. This issue not only caused damage to her property but also posed a threat to the overall structure of her home. Walls reported the situation to the DC Department of Buildings (DOB), leading to two fines totaling $1,661 against Berger for “improper upkeep” of his property, including chipping paint and rotting materials. Berger, however, denies these claims and is scheduled to attend a hearing in September to defend himself.

In an attempt to resolve the matter, Walls offered to purchase the wall from Berger through her attorney for its tax-assessed value of $600. However, this offer didn’t sit well with Berger, who felt blindsided by Walls’ involvement with the DOB. In response, Berger decided on a price of $50,000, without much research or consideration. Walls, on the other hand, sees his actions as childish and simply wants to protect her home from further damage.

Despite the conflict, the wall has attracted significant interest, with 13 offers already on the table. However, some potential buyers backed out after learning that any murals or advertisements on the wall would require approval. Walls, though, has no intention of paying $50,000 for the wall as she believes it would necessitate costly repairs and maintenance due to its current deteriorated state.

Interestingly, Berger listed the wall, located at 30th St NW, with a real estate agent named Robert Morris from Keller Williams. The strategic placement of the brick wall next to a parking lot maximizes its exposure and publicity potential. Morris, who has deep roots in DC, revealed that they received a serious offer from a young woman who expressed a desire to purchase the wall. While Morris is unsure about her plans for it, he remains determined to assist her throughout the process.

Despite encountering challenges, such as the requirement for approval from the Old Georgetown Board for any artistic or promotional additions to the wall, the sale of this unique property has certainly been an intriguing journey. Berger, Walls, and all interested parties are working toward finding a resolution and, ultimately, a solution to the ongoing predicament.
