They also highlighted that throughout the period reviewed by the CMA, Asda remained the cheapest traditional supermarket for both groceries and fuel.

Morrisons, which was acquired by private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in 2021, has faced concerns regarding its debt and credit rating. Despite this, a Morrisons spokesperson stressed the company’s commitment to remaining highly competitive in fuel pricing, stating that margins, while increased, remain low. They also explained that the calculation of fuel margin does not encompass the additional costs associated with running a fuel business, such as energy, rents, and payroll.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s have not yet commented on the matter.
