NEW YORK, Aug. 10 (UPI) — Filmmaker Peter Berg, known for authentically portraying the stories of ordinary Americans, takes on the Netflix drama series “Painkiller” to shed light on the devastating consequences of OxyContin and alcohol abuse. Berg, in an interview with UPI, shared his personal connection to the subject matter and his passion for immersing himself in real stories.

“Painkiller” is a limited series set to premiere on Wednesday and offers a fictionalized retelling of Perdue Pharma’s role in the opioid crisis in the United States. Berg, inspired by the success and greed of Perdue Pharma, was drawn to the project. The series is based on Barry Meier’s book, “Pain Killer,” and Patrick Radden Keefe’s New Yorker magazine article, “The Family That Built the Empire of Pain.”

By examining the power dynamics and exposing the two different systems of justice in the country, “Painkiller” showcases the victimization of everyday people. The series also highlights the need for accountability in the pharmaceutical industry and the dangers of unchecked capitalism.

The series features an ensemble cast, including Uzo Aduba, Matthew Broderick, Taylor Kitsch, and Dina Shihabi. Berg expressed excitement in working with actors like Broderick, who brings depth and likability to his portrayal of Richard Sackler, the chairman-president of Perdue Pharma.

“Painkiller” aims to raise awareness and bring justice to the victims of the opioid crisis, while also prompting viewers to question the motives behind the medications they consume.
