The co-founder of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, revealed her decision to include Elon Musk as a recipient of a portion of her heart in her will. This unconventional act is part of a larger campaign to raise awareness about animal rights.
In an interview with Miles Klee from Rolling Stone, Newkirk, who is 74 years old, explained her motive behind sending parts of her body worldwide after her death. She stated that Musk would receive one-third of her heart, as mentioned in the interview published on Wednesday. However, Newkirk emphasized that her gesture does not indicate affection towards the Tesla CEO.
“To avoid any misunderstanding, I selected my heart as a symbolic gesture, as I believe he lacks one,” Newkirk clarified.
Newkirk acknowledged Musk’s undeniable brilliance but condemned the animal experiments conducted by Neuralink, a company owned by Musk. Neuralink aims to develop a microchip that can be implanted in the human brain. The company is currently under investigation for potential animal-welfare violations, as reported by Reuters in December. Since 2018, approximately 1,500 animals, including sheep, pigs, and monkeys, have been killed in Neuralink’s experiments.
In a separate interview with Kat Hopps from the Daily Express, Newkirk reiterated her views about Musk’s lack of empathy, stating that he appears to be disconnected from reality. She critiqued Musk’s position of privilege that enables him to disregard the opinions of others.
Aside from Musk, Newkirk plans to allocate other body parts to influential figures, such as kings and presidents, as a symbolic statement. For instance, King Felipe VI of Spain will receive one of Newkirk’s ears to protest against bullfighting. The governor of Alaska is set to receive her lungs to draw attention to sled dog racing. Finally, the sitting US president at the time of her death will receive her lips if the tradition of the turkey pardon continues.
Newkirk understands that her decision to include Musk in her will may be seen as a publicity stunt. However, she emphasized that her primary objective is to shed light on crucial issues relating to animal cruelty in various forms.
As of now, Elon Musk has not responded to a request for comment made by Insider outside of regular business hours.
