Perfect Timing: Mets’ Francisco Alvarez to Receive Well-Deserved Day Off

Francisco Alvarez will enjoy some well-deserved rest on Wednesday. The New York Mets had already planned on giving their young catcher a break for the afternoon game following a night game, and Alvarez’s recent injuries make that decision even easier. After getting hit by a foul ball and having to leave Monday’s game, Alvarez played on Tuesday but had to be checked by trainers when he rolled his knee while scrambling back to second base. Despite this, Alvarez insisted he felt fine and remained in the game. He had undergone X-rays on his throwing hand the previous night, and luckily they came back clean.

During Monday’s game, Alvarez suffered the injury in the eighth inning when he was hit by a foul ball. He initially stayed in the game before being pulled out in a blowout and sent for X-rays. Mets manager Buck Showalter mentioned that it was difficult to determine any swelling due to Alvarez’s “meaty” hands. Nonetheless, the X-rays showed no significant damage.

Omar Narvaez, who has been serving as the backup catcher in Alvarez’s absence, will start in Wednesday’s matinee game. Alvarez, who is only 21 years old, will have a much-needed rest day with the Mets having an off day on Thursday as well. Showalter has expressed his preference for staggering the pitching schedule of his two co-aces, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, and continues to look for ways to split their appearances.

In the latest All-Star voting update, Francisco Lindor was the Mets’ sole position player who was on track to advance to the second phase of voting as the second-ranked shortstop in the National League. He trailed Orlando Arcia of the Atlanta Braves but was ahead of Xander Bogaerts of the San Diego Padres. The top two vote-getters at each position, along with the top six outfielders, will be announced on Thursday and proceed to the next phase of voting. Pete Alonso was placed third among NL first basemen, narrowly behind Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves. Alvarez ranked fourth among catchers, Jeff McNeil seventh among second basemen, Brett Baty seventh among third basemen, and Brandon Nimmo sixteenth among outfielders in the recent release.
