People Criticize My Decision to Attend Rich Friends’ Wedding as I Am Expected to Bring My Own Food and Drink, Plus Cover Travel Expenses to Paris

A dissatisfied attendee of a wealthy couple’s wedding has expressed confusion after receiving an invitation that required guests to bring their own food and drinks. The disgruntled guest took to Reddit’s Wedding Shaming thread to share her frustration with the unconventional plans. The couple’s festivities included a town hall ceremony and lunch on a boat in Paris, followed by a “picnic wedding” the next day. The woman, who is originally from France but now lives abroad, explained that she would be flying in for the event, but was disappointed by the lack of hospitality offered. Despite the couple’s wealth, their plans did not seem to be motivated by a tight budget, leading commenters to suggest that she rebel and refuse to attend.

The woman began listing her grievances by highlighting the unusual choice of Paris as the location, known for being expensive. She also found it odd that the plans were communicated through a WhatsApp group rather than official wedding invitations. Her concerns grew when she discovered that guests had to entertain themselves in Paris between the ceremony and lunch on a rented boat. The so-called “lunch” consisted only of snacks and a few drinks, with guests encouraged to bring their own beverages if they desired something other than beer or soft drinks. The boat rental ended at 8pm, leaving guests with no further entertainment, which the woman claimed was highly unusual for a French wedding. The couple then revealed that guests were required to bring their own lunch, towels, and drinks for a picnic wedding ceremony with 80 people in a park. In addition, they requested that guests come dressed semi-formally for group photos.

The woman expressed disgust at the lack of food and entertainment provided, given that the couple were wealthy and owned multiple houses. She found it distasteful to ask guests to fly to one of the most expensive cities in Europe and spend a weekend without being fed or entertained. As a result, she planned to give the couple a minimal gift of €50, as traditionally the gift is meant to cover the cost of the guest’s dinner. Other Reddit users sympathized with her, with some suggesting that she not attend the wedding at all. One commenter even jokingly suggested hurling oneself off the Eiffel Tower to avoid attending. However, another person with similar wedding experiences advised the French user to set low expectations and leave if the situation becomes too overwhelming.
