Pentagon Reveals US Counteraction on Iranian-Backed Groups Assaulting Troops in Iraq and Syria

The U.S. military conducted targeted strikes in eastern Syria against facilities linked to Iranian-backed militant groups. These groups were believed to be responsible for numerous rocket and drone attacks on American troops in Iraq and Syria, resulting in injuries to 21 service members. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that the strikes were carried out in response to ongoing attacks by Iranian-backed militia groups since October 17. The primary objective of these self-defense strikes was to demonstrate that the United States will not tolerate such attacks and will protect its personnel and interests.

These retaliatory operations took place during a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East, with the Israel-Hamas conflict ongoing. The U.S. deployed additional aircraft carriers, fighter squadrons, and air defense systems to the region to deter Iran and Hezbollah from escalating the situation further.

Senior U.S. officials have publicly attributed the recent drone and rocket attacks in Iraq and Syria to Iran. The Pentagon reported that 21 service members were injured, with all of them returning to duty after receiving treatment. Additionally, an American civilian contractor died from a cardiac arrest during one of the attacks.

President Joe Biden emphasized that the U.S. reserves the right to retaliate against any continued aggression. The Pentagon also reaffirmed its commitment to defending its troops and interests overseas and maintained the possibility of a military response. The U.S. has previously responded to these attacks with airstrikes targeting the proxy groups.

In the midst of the Israel-Hamas conflict, the U.S. has escalated its military presence in the Middle East to support Israel and deter other countries, including Iran and its proxies. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concern about potential escalation and emphasized that the U.S. does not seek conflict with Iran but will defend its people and security if attacked.
