U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is currently in Brussels where he is hosting a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. This group consists of ministers from nearly 50 countries who are providing support to Kyiv’s war efforts. Austin commended the resilience of the Ukrainian people and vowed that the United States would stand with Ukraine for the long term.
Austin emphasized that military equipment and training would continue to be provided to Kyiv, ensuring their ability to overcome Russian President Vladimir Putin’s campaign of cruelty and conquest. During his visit, Austin also met with his Ukrainian counterpart and acknowledged that Ukraine’s fight is a marathon, not a sprint.
Senior Pentagon officials, speaking candidly from NATO headquarters in Brussels, expressed their expectation of a lengthy and highly violent fight during the Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian troops.
Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, cautioned against prematurely setting an end date for the counteroffensive. He acknowledged that the battle is likely to take a significant amount of time and resources. Austin also addressed the issue of damaged Western combat vehicles, stating that Ukrainian forces have the ability to recover and repair them.
Here’s the latest update on the war and its global impact.
Zaporizhzhia steel plant stands strong against Russian attacks: Workers at a steel plant located near the front lines of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the southeast remain undeterred by the frequent air raid sirens. Despite working with molten metal at temperatures reaching 1,100 degrees Celsius, these steelworkers have adapted to the circumstances. Protective vests are worn along with their heatproof outfits. Although the plant has not been hit, explosions in the city can be heard.
