Pence Labels Trump as “Reckless” Regarding Election Claims, Expresses Doubt on a Specific Matter

During an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” former Vice President Mike Pence described former President Donald Trump’s actions on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol as “reckless” but expressed uncertainty about whether they constituted criminal behavior.

Pence stated, “While his words were reckless, based on what I know, I’m not yet convinced that they were criminal. I obviously wasn’t there for every meeting.”

Last week, Trump revealed that he had received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith indicating that he is the subject of a grand jury investigation concerning the events of January 6. Trump expects to face both arrest and indictment.

Pence, who intends to run for president in 2024, expressed his hope that no indictment will be issued against Trump for his role in the 2020 election and January 6. He also stated his belief that he handled the situation well that day.

Pence assured CNN’s Dana Bash that he fulfilled his duty on January 6, remarking, “I know I did my duty that day.”

Pence stated, “During multiple town halls in New Hampshire, I encountered deep concerns about the unequal treatment of the law. I believe that another indictment against the former president will only enhance this perception among the American people. I would prefer that these issues and the judgment of his actions on January 6 be left to the American people in the upcoming primaries.”

Pence acknowledged that he does not know Trump’s intentions on January 6, 2021, but characterized his observations of the former president’s behavior as “reckless.”

Pence expressed his belief that history will hold Trump accountable and that Republican primary voters recognize the need for new leadership in the party. He concluded by saying, “I know that some pundits and pollsters may see it differently.”

PENCE RAISES CONCERNS OVER LOW FUNDRAISING TOTALS

In March, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office charged Trump in relation to payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election. Trump pleaded not guilty in that case and denied any involvement in the payment or the concealment of records.

In June, Trump faced another indictment, this time for alleged willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and false statements. Trump pleaded not guilty and dismissed the charges as a “witch hunt.”

Upon learning about the grand jury investigation into his actions on January 6, Trump criticized the Department of Justice, labeling it as yet another “witch hunt.”

“Joe Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, who I turned down for the United States Supreme Court (in retrospect, based on his corrupt and unethical actions, a very wise decision!), together with Joe Biden’s Department of Injustice, have effectively issued a third indictment and arrest of Joe Biden’s NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT, who is largely dominating him in the race for the Presidency,” Trump posted on Truth Social last week.
