Paul McCartney reveals ’emotional’ final Beatles composition with John Lennon, says it’s a poignant milestone

Paul McCartney and , the last two living Beatles, have “come together” to complete a song that was written and recorded by the late back in 1970. The song, titled “Now and Then.”, has finally been completed with the help of artificial intelligence.

Hearing Lennon’s voice once again brought a profound experience for McCartney and Starr. McCartney described it as “quite emotional” and emphasized that it’s a genuine recording by the Beatles. He expressed his excitement about working on Beatles music in 2023 and releasing a new song that the public hasn’t heard before.

Starr also found it very emotional, stating that hearing Lennon’s voice was the closest they’ll ever come to having him back in the room. He added, “It was like John was there, you know. It’s far out.”

In the late 1970s, Lennon initially wrote and recorded the song at his home in New York City. In the mid-90s, McCartney, Starr, and George Harrison continued working on it. Now, over four decades later, McCartney and Starr have finally finished the song. McCartney coined it as “the last Beatles song” due to its significance.

The song features the original vocals by Lennon, which were preserved using artificial intelligence. Filmmaker Peter Jackson, known for his work on “The Beatles: Get Back,” was commissioned to apply AI restoration techniques to bring “Now and Then” back to life.

In 2022, McCartney and Starr added new instrumentation to the song, and guitar recordings by Harrison from the 90s were included to complement Lennon’s vocals. The final cut also incorporated backing vocals from Beatles songs like “Here, There And Everywhere,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Because.”

“Now and Then” is set to be released worldwide on November 2, and it marks an exciting milestone for Beatles fans.
