India expressed its intention to explore all legal avenues following the death sentences imposed on eight former Indian naval officers by a Qatari court on undisclosed charges.
Last year, reports emerged that the eight men, employed by a private company in Qatar, were apprehended on charges of espionage.
The specific accusations against them have not been disclosed by either Qatar or India.
The Indian government reacted with “deep shock” and pledged to raise the issue with Qatari authorities.
The country’s foreign ministry emphasized the significance of the case, stating they have been closely monitoring it and eagerly await the detailed judgement.
In a statement, the ministry affirmed their engagement with the families and legal team, while also vowing to consider all legal options available. Due to the “confidential nature of proceedings of this case,” further comments were withheld.
Millions of Indians reside in the Gulf region, predominantly as low-income, semi-skilled or unskilled workers.
These migrant laborers play a pivotal role in the economic development of Gulf Arab states and constitute a significant source of income for India.
