July 13 (UPI) — Patrick Mahomes and Mikaela Shiffrin emerged as the top athletes, while LeBron James was honored for his exceptional Record-Breaking Performance at the 2023 ESPY Awards held in Los Angeles.
The evening celebrated the achievements of athletes across various disciplines, with Mahomes being recognized as the Best Athlete in men’s sports and Best NFL Player. Additionally, his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, was hailed as the Best Team of the year.
Shiffrin earned the title of Best Athlete in women’s sports for her remarkable accomplishments as an Olympic skier, including her 87th World Cup victory, which set a new all-time record. Reflecting on her success, Shiffrin emphasized the importance of setting examples for future generations and inspiring them to pursue their dreams.
Other notable award recipients included A’ja Wilson as the Best WNBA Player, Nikola Jokic as the Best NBA Player, and Jamal Murray as the Best Comeback Athlete. Caleb Williams and Caitlin Clark were named the Best College Athletes in men’s and women’s sports, respectively.
Shohei Ohtani and Connor McDavid took home the titles of Best Athletes in MLB and NHL, while Max Verstappen, Scottie Scheffler, and Novak Djokovic were honored as the Best Driver, Best Golfer, and Best Tennis Player, respectively.
The ESPY Awards also recognized athletes from combat sports, with Jon Jones being named the Best UFC Fighter and Claressa Shields winning the Best Boxer award. Snowboarder Zach Miller was recognized as the Best Athlete with a Disability.
Lionel Messi, who exhibited exceptional performance throughout the year, was honored as the Best Soccer Player and received recognition for his remarkable Championship Performance during the World Cup with Argentina.
Justin Jefferson secured the Best Play award for his incredible one-handed catch during a game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills. LeBron James, on the other hand, earned the Best Record-Breaking Performance title for surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA scoring record. During his acceptance speech, James dismissed retirement rumors and expressed his commitment to the game.
The ESPY Awards also highlighted Angel Reese as the Best Breakthrough Athlete, Damar Hamlin’s inspiring recovery from on-field cardiac arrest, and the Pat Tillman Award for Service presented to the Buffalo Bills training staff as recognition for their dedication and service. The United States Women’s National Team and Liam Hendriks of the Chicago White Sox were honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage and the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance, respectively.
Hendriks, who battled non-Hodgkin lymphoma, recently announced his victory over cancer, bringing hope and inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
