Patrick Kane signs a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings, according to sources at ESPN.
After 16 years with the Chicago Blackhawks and a brief stint with the New York Rangers, Kane, a nine-time All-Star, is recovering from hip resurfacing surgery. He has considered several teams, including the Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins, before narrowing his choices down to two Eastern Conference teams in the final week of his decision. His deal with the Red Wings does not include any bonuses, sources said.
Kane relocated his family to Toronto for his rehab, skating with former NHL player Cody Hodgson, and sharing his love for the game during interview meetings. He expressed humility and determination to earn his spot, understanding that he may not be placed on a team’s first line or power-play unit.
Kane, with 1,237 points in 1,180 games and 451 career goals, chose the Red Wings after being impressed by coach Derek Lalonde’s vision for the team and the opportunity to reunite with former linemate Alex DeBrincat.
Throughout his rehab, Kane sought advice from other athletes with similar surgery experiences, such as Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom and tennis star Andy Murray.
The Red Wings, currently in third place in the Atlantic Division with an 11-6-3 record, offer Kane a chance to contribute to their ongoing rebuild.
