Ready to hit the ice again after his hip surgery, Patrick Kane has made the decision to continue his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, as confirmed by sources within the league.
Kane has signed a one-year deal with Detroit, following weeks of deliberation in free agency to weigh his options, according to insider sources.
Other teams such as the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, and Toronto Maple Leafs had shown interest in signing the 35-year-old winger.
Kane underwent hip resurfacing surgery on June 1 and has managed to meet the six-month recovery timeline. He has spent a significant amount of time in the Greater Toronto Area for treatment, rehabilitation, and skating activities.
Coming off his least productive season with 57 points in 73 games split between the Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks, Kane dealt with a nagging hip injury while playing for a Chicago team in the midst of a rebuild.
Joining Detroit, Kane will reunite with former Chicago teammate Alex DeBrincat, who leads the Red Wings with 12 goals in 20 games this season. Detroit, with a record of 11-6-3, currently holds a playoff position in the tough Atlantic Division.
The opportunity to chase another championship was a priority for Kane, who was a key figure in three Stanley Cup victories with the Blackhawks and has an impressive list of accolades including the Conn Smythe Trophy, Calder Trophy, and being recognized as one of the NHL’s 100 Greatest Players in 2017.
Having roots in Michigan from his time with the Honeybaked AAA team in Farmington Hills and the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Kane will find some familiarity in Detroit.
