Patrick Dempsey first captured hearts as neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, and his breakout role as an endearing outcast in 1987’s Can’t Buy Me Love still resonates with fans nearly two decades later.
His heartthrob status led to numerous appearances in this publication over the years, and now he’s being crowned Sexiest Man Alive by PEOPLE.
“When I first heard the news, I was completely shocked,” the 57-year-old Maine native tells PEOPLE. “I’ve always been the bridesmaid! It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”
Closest to his heart is the Dempsey Center, which he founded to support cancer patients and their loved ones in honor of his late mom.
Another passion of his is being a family man to his wife Jillian, their kids Talula, Sullivan, and Darby, and honing his penchant for race-car driving.
When asked about his reaction to being named Sexiest Man Alive, Dempsey says, “I’d completely forgotten about it and never even contemplated being in this position. So my ego is good.”
