Renowned actor Alan Arkin, known for his Academy Award-winning performance in “Little Miss Sunshine” and his impressive career that included four Oscar nominations, passed away at the age of 89, as announced by his family on Friday.

Arkin’s sons, Adam and Anthony, confirmed the news through his publicist, expressing that their father was an extraordinary and multifaceted artist and individual.

The talented actor passed away at his residence in Carlsbad.

Arkin began his acting journey with the Second City comedy troupe in Chicago and achieved early recognition for his role in “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.” His portrayal as an offbeat but caring grandfather in “Little Miss Sunshine” earned him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Over the span of more than 40 years, he received nominations for the Academy Awards, starting from “The Russians Are Coming” in 1966 to “Argo” in 2012. Additionally, he was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” in 1968.

In his most recent work, Arkin starred in the successful Netflix comedy series “The Kominsky Method” alongside Michael Douglas. He received two Emmy nominations for his outstanding contribution to the show.

He studied acting at Los Angeles City College, California State University, Los Angeles, and Bennington College in Vermont.

Arkin’s first marriage was to his classmate Jeremy Yaffe, with whom he had two sons, Adam and Matthew. After their divorce in 1961, Arkin married actress-writer Barbara Dana and had a son named Anthony. All three of Arkin’s sons followed in their father’s footsteps and pursued acting careers, with Adam appearing in the TV series “Chicago Hope.” Arkin tied the knot with his current wife Suzanne in 1996.
