Passengers Erroneously Overstuff Carry-Ons, According to Flight Attendant

  • CiCi, a flight attendant, shares her packing tips on TikTok and Instagram.
  • According to CiCi, the biggest packing mistake she sees is when travelers overstuff their carry-on bags.
  • Travelers should be able to lift their bags into the overhead bin themselves, as it is not the flight attendant’s responsibility.

During CiCi’s career as a flight attendant, she has observed various travel mistakes.

However, as she previously mentioned to Insider, the biggest mistake is packing a bag that is too full.

CiCi emphasized the importance of being able to lift your bag into the overhead bin, especially for smaller individuals.

While all the packing tips on TikTok and Instagram may be useful for maximizing space, CiCi stressed that travelers should never reach the point where their bag becomes too heavy.

If the bag becomes too heavy for her to lift, CiCi, who shares flight tips on TikTok and Instagram under the name @cici.inthesky, said she knows it’s time to make some adjustments.

Flight attendant Rich Henderson said it's not
the end of the world if your luggage can't fit in the overhead bin directly above your seat.

Flight attendants are not responsible for lifting your suitcase

CiCi explained that it is not a flight attendant’s duty to lift passengers’ bags, as doing so can strain their bodies.

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of this.

As The Washington Post reported, lifting suitcases is not part of a flight attendant’s job requirements. Their focus during the boarding process is to ensure passengers quickly reach their seats and to watch out for any disruptive behavior.

While each airline’s policy may vary, most state that flight attendants are not obligated to assist with luggage. Delta’s website, for example, explicitly states that passengers should be able to handle their own carry-on baggage.

“When packing, please remember that flight attendants are unable to proactively assist customers placing carry-on baggage into overhead bins, with certain exceptions,” Delta’s website states. These exceptions may include passengers with disabilities, unaccompanied minors, and elderly travelers.

JetBlue’s baggage page has a similar statement: “Please make sure items can be lifted into the overhead bin if assistance is not available and the item does not fit beneath the seat.”

Therefore, if your bag is becoming too heavy, take CiCi’s advice and consider using your suitcase as part of an exercise routine.
