Passenger Overboard: American College Student Identified on World’s Largest Cruise Ship

The family of the passenger who fell overboard from the world’s largest cruise ship has identified him as 19-year-old Sigmund Ropich. According to U.S. officials and a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean, Ropich went overboard from the Wonder of the Seas off the coast of Cuba during a seven-day cruise that departed from Port Canaveral, Florida. The ship’s crew immediately initiated a search for Ropich in collaboration with local authorities. It has been confirmed by a family member that Ropich is the individual who went overboard.

In an effort to locate Ropich, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba has been in contact with the family, and Cuban officials have transitioned their search from the sea to the coast and land. The incident occurred in Cuban territorial waters, and therefore, the Coast Guard is not involved in search and rescue operations. However, since Ropich is an American citizen, the Coast Guard will conduct an investigation upon the cruise ship’s return to the country.

Ropich was on vacation with his best friends, a co-worker, and the co-worker’s family. Described as a great, trouble-free, and intelligent individual, Ropich excelled in high school academics and is currently a college student. He is known for his kind, reserved, and humble nature, as well as his ability to bring laughter to others. The family anxiously awaits updates on the search.

Video shared on TikTok by fellow cruise passengers captured a rescue boat near the cruise ship as it attempted to locate Ropich after he went overboard. An employee on the ship’s PA system confirmed the incident and announced that search and rescue operations were underway.
