Passenger Goes Missing Near Cuba Aboard World’s Largest Cruise Ship

A college student on vacation with friends went missing from the largest cruise ship in the world earlier this week. Despite ongoing search efforts, 19-year-old Sigmund Ropich has not been found. According to Insider, Ropich disappeared from Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas on Tuesday night while the ship was off the coast of Cuba. The circumstances of his fall from the ship are unclear, as is the length of time he spent in the water before the search began, as reported by CNN. The cruise line is cooperating with local authorities during the search.

There has been some confusion regarding the leadership of the search operation. Royal Caribbean initially stated that they were working with the US Coast Guard to locate Ropich, but the Cuban Border Guard is actually in charge of the search as Ropich fell into Cuban waters. Although the Cuban Border Guard has not confirmed this information, Ropich’s sister, Savannah Ropich, claims that Cuban officials told her family that the ocean search has been called off.

Savannah Ropich expressed her concerns about the search efforts, stating that she doesn’t believe Royal Caribbean is taking the matter seriously enough and that Cuban officials are withholding information from her family. She wrote a heartfelt message to her missing brother on Facebook, stating that she will not give up on him. The Ropich family is desperate to have their brother back home and feels frustrated by the lack of updates and progress in the search. (Read more Royal Caribbean stories.)
