Parkland Massacre: Families of Victims Get Closure as They Visit the Scene of Their Loved Ones’ Tragic Deaths

After years of being locked away and untouched, the bloodstained halls and classrooms of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are now open for private tours for the families of the victims of the Parkland school shooting. The families of the 14 students and three staff members who lost their lives, as well as the 17 wounded and their loved ones, will have the opportunity to visit the building where the tragedy occurred.

The school district has decided to demolish the three-story building and potentially replace it with a memorial. As part of the ongoing trials, prosecutors led four families through the building, with more tours scheduled in the coming weeks. Additionally, there may be a reenactment of the shooting for a civil lawsuit against the deputy.

Linda Beigel Schulman, mother of geography teacher Scott Beigel who died while protecting his students, expressed her need to see where her son was murdered and where he tried to save his students. Emotionally, she shared that she cannot say goodbye after five years and 151 days since the incident.

Inside the building, bloodstains and broken glass still remain on the floor, along with deflated Valentine’s Day balloons, wilted flowers, and discarded gifts. Students’ desks still have opened textbooks and laptops, some of which were knocked over during the chaos. In one classroom, the unfinished chess game of a slain student remained untouched.

For Tony Montalto, whose daughter Gina was shot and killed on the first floor, stepping inside the building and walking through its halls was an incredibly difficult experience, second only to seeing his daughter’s lifeless body. He described her as his first born, his only daughter, and his beloved.

This development marks an important step for the families affected by the Parkland school shooting, allowing them to gain a sense of closure and pay tribute to their lost loved ones.
