Parents Advocate for Privacy of Tennessee School Shooter’s Writing

A motion was filed by a group of Tennessee parents from The Covenant School, where a tragic shooting occurred in March, to prevent the release of the shooter’s writings. The parents firmly believe that these writings, which they consider to be the dangerous and harmful products of a mentally disturbed individual, should not be made public. This motion came shortly after over 60 Tennessee House Republicans urged for the writings to be released. The Republicans argued that the timely release of these records is crucial in understanding the shooter’s motives and behavior before a special session where firearm regulations are to be discussed. In response to previous lawsuits demanding the release of the records, the Covenant parents are seeking to intervene. The lawsuits were filed by The Tennessee Firearms Association, Star News Digital Media, and the National Police Association. Police initially denied the public records requests, stating that the writings were protected as part of an ongoing investigation but hinted at their eventual release. However, due to the lawsuits, the police decided to wait for court direction. The cases have become more complex with The Covenant School and Covenant Presbyterian Church also requesting intervention. Although The Associated Press has requested the writings, they have not filed a lawsuit to obtain them. The shooter, Audrey Hale, had been planning the massacre for months and fired 152 rounds during the attack before being killed by police. While Hale was receiving treatment for an undisclosed emotional disorder, there has been no disclosed link between the care received and the shooting. The tragic incident claimed the lives of three children, Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, as well as three adults, Katherine Koonce, Mike Hill, and Cynthia Peak.
