Panthers’ offensive line raises concerns following QB Bryce Young’s debut

On third down passes, Young faced some challenges as he went 0-2. One pass to Chark was thrown high under pressure, and Laviska Shenault Jr. ran his route too deep on the other. The QB was eventually sacked on the final third down.

“Taking hits from the Jets pass rush is just part of the game,” Young acknowledged. “Football is a physical sport, and getting hit is part of the job description. It’s something we expect as players.”

“However, I can’t let those hits affect my decision-making or the way I play. For me, it’s all part of the game. It happens, and I stay focused on the next play and ensuring I execute every opportunity I get out there.”

While the rookie showed calmness in the pocket and the ability to progress through his reads, his performance was too brief to draw any major conclusions. Nonetheless, he did demonstrate his toughness.

“That first hit he took was quite significant,” commented Reich. “I asked him on the sideline in the second half how it felt, and he said he barely felt it. So, I guess he’s doing okay.”

The struggles of the offensive line greatly impacted Young’s debut. Despite having four starters in the game, the Carolina team failed to establish a solid run game and the QB faced consistent pressure. The right guard position seems to be a clear concern until Austin Corbett returns.

Going up against the deep Jets defensive line, even without their starters, will likely prove challenging for many offenses this season.

Young entered the NFL with doubts about his slender frame. Although it wasn’t an issue in college and the Panthers’ staff has dismissed concerns, the offensive line struggles in Saturday’s game may revive those questions.
