Pandemic Street Cafe Finds Permanent Home in Vibrant Brooklyn Neighborhood

This sidewalk pop-up is finally going legitimate. Little Armenia Cafe, previously stationed on the pavement in front of Ararat El-Rawi’s fourth-floor walk-up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, now has its own permanent location in Greenpoint. El-Rawi credits his good luck to divine intervention, stating that “the Gods got together and took pity on my poor soul.” This former waiter lost his job during the pandemic but seized the opportunity to start his own business after working in renowned establishments such as Cafe Un Deux Trois and Esca.

In 2021, El-Rawi began operating a takeout stand from his apartment above Hancock Street, which quickly gained popularity. As demand grew, he expanded to the curb in front of his building, setting up covered tables with a variety of chairs and offering a $20 prix-fixe menu, daily specials, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Guests in need of a restroom were even invited to use the one in El-Rawi’s apartment.

Despite the success, maintaining the outdoor operation proved challenging during colder months. When a friend offered to help secure a commercial venue, El-Rawi eagerly accepted. Although the process of finding a suitable location was disheartening at times, Cafe Little Armenia is finally set to open its doors at its new address on 1035 Manhattan Ave early next month.

The new Greenpoint location will feature El-Rawi’s take on traditional Armenian dishes he grew up with, a $20 prix-fixe lunch, a thoughtfully curated beer and wine menu, and a rotating exhibit by local artists. On Fridays and Saturdays, a seven-course menu will be available in a designated area called the Living Room Table, paying homage to Little Armenia’s humble beginnings. El-Rawi expressed excitement about the upcoming opening, as the journey from pandemic uncertainties to the success of his new venture is a poignant one. He aims to showcase the history and evolution of the cafe through its unique atmosphere and culinary offerings.
