Palm Springs Airport Gears Up for Impending Hurricane Hilary

Palm Springs International Airport authorities have implemented proactive measures to ensure the safety of passengers and minimize disruptions in anticipation of the approaching storm.

Daniel Meier, the airport’s deputy director of aviation, marketing, and air service development, stated, “While we cannot accurately predict the exact number of flights to be canceled or delayed, we anticipate several disruptions in the coming days due to the imminent storm.”

Hurricane Hilary was classified as a Category 3 storm on Saturday morning off the coast of Baja California. Although it is anticipated to weaken to a tropical storm upon reaching Southern California, forecasters are cautioning the public about heavy rainfall, strong winds, and a high risk of flooding on Sunday and Monday. Some precipitation may occur late on Saturday as well.

The preparation plan of Palm Springs Airport encompasses testing backup systems, increasing staff availability, ensuring the availability of backup generators in case of power outages, and clearing storm drains and roadways to mitigate potential floods. Moreover, strategically placed sandbags have been positioned around the airport for additional protection.

The airport management closely collaborates with the Palm Springs Fire Department, Palm Springs Police Department, and city leaders to ensure a coordinated and efficient response.
