According to reports, an Australian woman is currently fighting for her life after she and her partner fell approximately 33 feet from a medieval wall in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The incident occurred at around 2:35 a.m. on Saturday, when the couple accidentally slipped and fell from a wall situated between two restaurants in Pile, an Old Town neighborhood in Dubrovnik.

This area, near the city center, became famous for its appearances in seasons two and three of HBO’s “Game of Thrones”.

As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, the accident occurred when the 26-year-old woman leaned against her 34-year-old partner.

The Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department spokesperson, Andrijana Biskup, stated that the incident was accidental and there is no indication of any criminal activity, according to a statement given to the local news outlet Dubrovacka Televizija.

Breathalyzer tests revealed that both individuals were under the influence of alcohol, with the man having a blood alcohol reading slightly exceeding 0.2 and the woman’s reading at 0.3.

As stated by the Cleveland Clinic, at these levels, a person may experience confusion, vomiting, drowsiness, and potentially alcohol poisoning if the level exceeds 0.3%.

The woman is now in a coma

The couple was immediately taken to General Hospital Dubrovnik, located in the area. Dr. Marija Bekić, the hospital’s director, informed the local media outlet Dubrovacki Vjesnik that the young woman is in intensive care and has been put into an induced coma.

According to Bekić, the woman’s condition is life-threatening, as additional medical examinations revealed she suffered spinal and brain damage, along with vertebral fractures, as reported by Croatian broadcaster HRT.

Dr. Ivan Benčić, a trauma specialist at the hospital, stated that the medical team is closely monitoring her and doing their best to save her life. He mentioned, “As far as the male is concerned, he had a far better outcome than she did,” according to a translation by The Herald.

The male partner underwent surgery for a broken leg and is currently in stable condition, as stated by Bekić to Dubrovacki Vjesnik.

Insider’s requests for comment to the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department have not received an immediate response.

A spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that consular assistance is being provided to the two Australians involved in the incident.
