Ottawa Halts Facebook and Instagram Advertising Amid News Blocking Dispute

Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez announces that the Canadian federal government will cease advertising on Facebook and Instagram.

This decision is in response to Meta’s commitment to block Canadian news content on their Facebook and Instagram platforms following the enactment of Canada’s Online News Act.

Under the new law, tech giants will be obligated to compensate media outlets for the content they share or repurpose on their platforms.

Rodriguez criticizes Meta’s decision to block content for some users even before the bill was passed, calling it “unreasonable” and “irresponsible.” As a result, Canada will halt its advertising on their platforms.

Google has also stated its intention to block Canadian news content when the bill takes effect in six months. However, Rodriguez assures that the government is in discussions with the company and believes that any concerns will be addressed through the implementation of regulations accompanying the bill.

Rodriguez held a press conference alongside MPs from the Bloc Quebecois and the NDP, both of which supported the legislation.
