To replace Worrell as the state attorney for the 9th judicial circuit, DeSantis has tapped Florida judge Andrew Bain. According to a statement from DeSantis’ office, Worrell’s practices and policies have enabled dangerous criminals to receive reduced sentences or even escape incarceration altogether, undermining Florida law and jeopardizing the safety of the communities she was elected to serve.
During a press conference, DeSantis emphasized the importance of removing Worrell, stating that he is confident in the authority granted to him by the Florida constitution. This is not the first time DeSantis has taken drastic measures against a Florida prosecutor he deemed incompetent. In August 2022, he suspended Hillsborough County state attorney Andrew Warren for refusing to enforce the state’s abortion ban, a decision that was upheld in court.
