Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Contribute $10 Million to Help Maui Wildfire Victims

This week, the dynamic duo of Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey launched the People’s Fund of Maui. In a joint announcement on Instagram, they pledged to put “money directly in the pockets of those who were affected by the recent wildfires.” To kick things off, they made a generous $10 million donation.

The social media post explained, “As we have seen firsthand, the impacts of these wildfires have been devastating, and we’re here to ensure with 100% guarantee that your donations will go directly into the hands of Lahaina residents.”

Residents who were displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula are eligible for $1200 per month to assist them during the recovery period. The application process is simple and can be done on the PeoplesFundofMaui.org website.

The fires reportedly started after midnight on Aug. 8, fueled by strong winds. Unfortunately, there are still 1,100 people missing in Lahaina, a town of 13,000, as search efforts continue.

Dwayne Johnson, who spent part of his childhood in Hawaii, emphasized the importance of unity in the face of adversity. Oprah Winfrey, whose own house was spared from the wildfires, was inspired by Dolly Parton’s charitable efforts in her own community.

Maui County has filed a lawsuit against Hawaiian Electric Company for negligence, alleging that the company failed to shut down power despite hazardous conditions. According to the company’s website, they serve 95% of Hawaii’s residents.

In response to the lawsuit, Maui County assured its residents that they are committed to recovering from the damages and rebuilding. President Joe Biden has also promised to support Maui in its recovery efforts.

In their news release, Dwayne Johnson expressed his gratitude for the support and resources received. He recognized the community leaders who have offered guidance and reminded the locals of their resilience:

“Even in the most difficult times, the people of Maui come together and rise. That’s what makes us stronger.”
