Sierra Leone’s main opposition party is calling for a rerun of the recent presidential election after President Julius Maada Bio was declared the winner and sworn in for a second term. The All People’s Congress party accused the electoral commission of colluding with Bio’s party to manipulate the results. They are demanding the resignation of electoral commission Chairman Mohamed Konneh and his team. The party stated that the announcement of fraudulent election results was a direct threat to the democracy, unity, and survival of the nation.
Official results show that Bio received 56.17% of the vote, enough to avoid a runoff against his main rival Kamara. Kamara received 41.16% of the ballots cast. Bio, who was sworn in several days after the vote, urged Sierra Leoneans to remain peaceful and work towards the development of the country. There are concerns about potential protests following the election, as the country has seen demonstrations over the state of the economy in recent months.
Pressure is mounting on the electoral commission to be transparent in its voting tabulation process. While regional observers deemed the elections free and fair, Western observers noted inconsistencies in the counting and tabulation process. The European Union, the UK, the US, and France have specifically called on the electoral commission to publish results from each polling station. EU observers reported discrepancies in the number of valid votes per polling station between the first and second rounds of presidential results.
It is crucial for the electoral commission to address these concerns and ensure transparency to uphold the integrity of the democratic process in Sierra Leone.
