Opinion: Urgent resolution of garda impasse required for public safety

Members of An Garda Síochána, who are known as an unarmed police force, made a hasty decision by metaphorically pressuring their chief in a dispute over schedules.

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) has now voted to withhold voluntary overtime on five Tuesdays next month and completely cease all work on November 10.

This action has become known as the “Drew Flu,” a play on words related to the “Blue Flu” incident in 2016 when gardaí took similar action. However, there is nothing amusing about the consequences this could have for the public they are responsible for protecting.

Those who safeguard the State have a duty to fulfill their role and respect their chain of command. Over the past three years, sixty meetings have been held to discuss the matter, but the GRA claims that no progress has been made.

Commissioner Harris has expressed his willingness to engage in intensive negotiations without pre-conditions to resolve the deadlock.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee considers it “regrettable” that GRA members are refusing voluntary overtime. It is undeniable that gardaí have legitimate grievances and that their work is vital to our daily lives.

However, there are established processes for addressing claims and resolving disputes that should be followed.

The vote of no confidence marks a significant turning point for gardaí. The GRA has acknowledged that it is not their responsibility to appoint a commissioner, yet they are taking actions that undermine the person holding that position.

The public holds the garda force in high regard for good reasons.

However, threatening to withhold services only serves to erode confidence and support for their cause. The minister and commissioner acknowledge the challenges with the current situation and the rosters, but the only way to resolve them is through dialogue. The garda force, much like the defense forces, faces significant issues with recruitment and retention that need urgent attention.

Personalizing grievances or seeking revenge against an individual does not contribute constructively to resolving the situation.

Recent protests at the Dáil and the significant cocaine seizure along our coast demonstrate the trust and reliance we have in the gardaí. They deserve fair treatment and payment, along with adequate staffing to fulfill their duties. It is evident that there is discontent within their ranks, but the appropriate avenue for resolving differences is through negotiation.

This situation presents an unprecedented crisis that could lead to either a breakdown or a breakthrough. It is in everyone’s best interest for reason to prevail, allowing for a resolution to be reached.
