Opinion: Republicans’ Desire to Impeach Biden Could Ultimately Harm Their Cause.

The topic of impeachment is currently circulating in Congress, with House Republicans filing resolutions to impeach multiple high-ranking officials, including President Biden. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is considering the idea but has not given his approval yet. However, Republicans fail to grasp the implications and consequences of impeachment, as it could ultimately backfire on them.

During a recent appearance on Fox News, McCarthy mentioned that the allegations against President Biden were serious enough to warrant an impeachment inquiry. This statement was likely an attempt to appease the party’s right-wing faction rather than a promise to initiate impeachment proceedings. The real motive behind these impeachment resolutions is the Republicans’ baseless claim that the president has been bribed by foreign interests, which they consider to be a significant crime. However, such wild allegations are unlikely to survive the impeachment process.

The impeachment process is a complex and lengthy one, governed by strict rules. Although Republicans would have control over the initial phase in the House, they would need substantial evidence to substantiate their charges. Given the weak allegations against Biden, it would be unwise for Republicans to pursue impeachment.

While impeachment may generate attention and seem like a way to discredit Biden, it would actually pose a significant problem for Republicans. Simply making outrageous accusations during a brief appearance on Fox News is different from presenting them in an impeachment investigation scrutinized by the media and where evidence must be provided and witnesses cross-examined. Impeachment would be the most prominent news story for an extended period, allowing the public to engage in deliberation and form their own conclusions.

Republicans should remember their experience with impeachment 25 years ago when they attempted to bring down President Bill Clinton over his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Instead of turning against Clinton, the public turned against Republicans, viewing their pursuit as preposterous. Clinton’s approval ratings even rose during that time, and Democrats gained seats in the midterm elections.

Some Republicans might hope that once they initiate impeachment proceedings and begin investigating Biden, his alleged wrongdoing will become apparent. This “fake it till you make it” approach is similar to what led to the downfall of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. However, this impeachment impulse arises from frustration rather than concrete evidence. Despite their control of the House and holding hearings, Biden remains president, and none of his legislative achievements have been undone. This frustration drives Republicans to fantasize about exposing his crimes and removing him from office.

It is worth noting that Republicans also seek revenge for former President Donald Trump’s two impeachments by introducing resolutions to expunge them. However, these attempts are unlikely to succeed, just like the impeachments they propose.

The desire to oust Biden and his Cabinet from office may persist, but it is crucial to recognize that impeachment would only expose Republicans themselves, rather than achieving their goal of revealing the supposed evil of the current administration.
