Opinion | Republicans: Debunking the Myth of Merrick Garland as Hunter Biden’s Attorney General

Comment on this story

It may seem that Merrick Garland is the Attorney General of the United States, but if you judged based on the performance of Republicans at the House Judiciary Committee hearing, you’d be mistaken. Garland appears to be the Attorney General of Hunter Biden—and only Hunter Biden. The committee Republicans focused solely on him, ignoring other important issues such as crime, the border crisis, domestic extremists, Chinese spies, and gun violence.

Interestingly, Hunter Biden is actually facing prosecution on gun charges that likely wouldn’t have been brought against someone with a different last name. He also faces the likelihood of being indicted on tax charges, even though prosecutors had agreed to a plea deal for lesser charges. It’s worth noting that the prosecution is being handled by David Weiss, a U.S. attorney appointed by Trump and retained by the Biden administration to avoid allegations of political interference.

Despite Garland’s efforts to distance himself from the Hunter Biden probe and allow Weiss to conduct the investigation independently, the Judiciary Committee Republicans refuse to acknowledge the facts. Chairman Jim Jordan, in particular, seems more interested in making noise than presenting a compelling argument based on evidence. He believes there is a conspiracy to protect Joe Biden by appointing Weiss as special counsel, but the reality is that Garland has been criticized for every decision he has made in this investigation.

Garland is not the first attorney general to face such treatment from lawmakers, but the Republican questioning at this hearing was particularly egregious. Representatives like Thomas Massie accused Garland of contempt of Congress and even suggested he may have perjured himself. This level of hostility and baseless accusation detracts from the important work the Attorney General is doing to uphold the rule of law.

Garland’s responses to these attacks remained composed, except for one moment when he passionately defended himself against accusations of anti-Catholic bias. As someone with a family background marked by persecution and tragedy, he found such claims outrageous. It’s clear that Republicans are using these smear tactics to undermine trust in the Justice Department, all in service of their own political agenda.

In conclusion, the House Judiciary Committee hearing was nothing more than a baseless and politically motivated attack on Merrick Garland and the Justice Department. Adam Schiff summed it up well—Jordan and others are trying to create a false narrative of unequal justice to benefit Donald Trump and tarnish the reputation of Hunter Biden. It’s a transparently political ploy without any factual basis.
